The
dachshund, also known as a wiener dog, is a short-legged, long-bodied dog breed
originated in Germany. Some people say that
it looks like a hot dog, but actually, it is the hot dog that resembles the pooch. Hot dogs were originally known as dachshund
sausages. Through time, it became
shortened to hot dogs.
The
name dachshund literally means badger dogs.
Historically, the German foresters wanted to develop a fearless,
elongated dog that could dig into badger burrows and then go into the burrows
to fight the badger. With their short,
sturdy legs, dachshunds could go deep into narrow tunnels to hunt.
In
2002, the dachshund was the fifth most popular dog in America. Perhaps, it is because dachshunds exhibit
three coat varieties: smooth (short), long hair, and wire. They also come in two sizes: standard and
miniature. There is a dachshund for
everyone!
Dachshunds
are playful, but they can be quite stubborn.
They are difficult to housebreak, although with patience and consistency,
it is possible. They are hunting dogs,
and they can be ferocious.
Though
they are relatively healthy dogs, dachshunds are prone to back problems, due to
their long body. The risk of injury may
be worsened by obesity, jumping, or rough handling. They have a long body and short legs; they
are not the most athletic dogs.
Personally,
I love dachshunds and I think they are adorable. In fact, my friends and I got a dachshund
puppy and we had him for a few months. We
named him Gus. He was a very sweet,
funny pup, although potty-training him was a challenge. After learning about dachshund’s personality,
we could understand why it was so difficult.
Gus is with my friend’s brother now, and he is still very sweet and
comical. I miss him very much and I hope
that he is happy and healthy.
These
are some cute pictures of Gus. Enjoy!
I still don't know if licking pants is a dachshund thing... |
